While different areas of Canada have very distinct characters and cultures, Newfoundland and Labrador really does stand out from the rest of the country. Perhaps this is because a large part of it is an island, and the other part - Labrador - is attached to the mainland, and is very isolated. Another theory is that this uniqueness is because Newfoundland and Labrador was a separate entity until 1949, only becoming part of Canada in that year.
